Mental health app design

A new app to help users track their mental wellbeing

Introduction

1 in 5 people experience mental health problems every year. The My Possible Self app and website use clinically-proven research to help people with stress, anxiety, depression or other issues log how they are feeling, and also promote positive ways of thinking.

My responsibilities

  • Create design concepts
  • Present to stakeholders
  • Create Bootstrap launch site

Challenge

My role was to create a set of great-looking designs for the mobile app, and design and build a separate responsive website built in Bootstrap. Both launched in Summer 2017.

My designs were used in protoypes to get user feedback before the final app was launched.

Creating the My Possible Self app was challenging in many ways:

  • The app needed to be as user friendly as possible. The content of the app is taken from an Australian website, myCompass. The website heavily uses forms for users to add in their data which, although fine on a website, doesn't work well on a mobile device. I needed to ensure that inputting data would be easy for users, but also technically possible.
  • The designs needed to encourage people to log in every day to submit their results. Visually I had to create designs that were appealing, not too clinical and above all easy to use.
  • The designs had to use existing branding I had to make sure the My Possible Self branding and character designs were utilised. The client wanted a design that was 'fun' but also looked professional considering the subject matter.

Initial designs

My initial designs used a clear and classy style with a warm but also clinica colour scheme.

Chosen design

Stakeholders wanted an approach that used character designs they created, so the design was reworked to accomodate this.

I'm especially proud of my work in bringing this app to life, as I know it helps so many people. The app is available for iOS and Android. Find out more about it here.
